This Ultra-Rare Mercedes-Benz SLR “McLaren Edition” Can Now Be Yours

One of the greatest automotive collaborations in recent memory can now have a new home in your garage.
A desirable iteration of the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SLR “McLaren Edition” is currently up for private sale through RM Sotheby’s. The stunning coupe is one of just 25 examples that were reimagined by the supercar maker last decade.
Mercedes and McLaren are Formula 1 rivals today, but before that they were teammates from 1995 until 2014. The partnership extended off the track, too, with the German and British marques pairing up to build a stylish road car based on the legendary 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe. That vehicle, the SLR McLaren, would raise the bar for supercars when it debuted in 2003, mixing luxury features and next-level performance like nothing before.

The sophisticated speed machine would remain in production until 2010, and as tends to happen coveted vehicle around for that long, several variants were released. But one of the best wouldn’t debut until after the model had been discontinued. In 2011, McLaren Special Operations announced a bespoke program that would seek to take the grand tourer to a new level. Although its 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 would be left untouched, performance was improved by equipping the vehicle with a downforce-maximizing body kit, upgraded steering and suspension components, and a new titanium sports exhaust. It was also exclusive, with only 25 cars receiving the “McLaren Edition” package.
The SLR up for sale belongs to this select group. It’s a Japan-spec example that was originally delivered to Tokyo in the fall of 2005. Its current owner acquired it in 2017; they ponied up over $175,000 and had it shipped to England to get the full “McLaren Edition” treatment. The car is finished in a metallic red that is so dark it appears black in certain lights, has tinted headlights and windows, and rides on a set of wheels from the SLR McLaren 722 S variant. Its retrimmed interior is covered in black Alcantara with red contrast stitching and features a numbered plaque on the center console. The car has over 17,500 miles on the odometer, but less than 750 of those miles have come since the conversion, so it should be in pretty decent shape as well.
