Wayne Gretzy’s Former Rolls-Royce Corniche Is Heading to Auction

Here’s an auto auction that Alexander Ovechkin will want to keep an eye on if he wants to own anything else that used to belong to Wayne Gretzky.

A 1994 Rolls-Royce Corniche IV that was given to the Great One by the Los Angeles Kings after he broke the NHL scoring record is currently up for grabs. The convertible is being auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s in a single-lot online sale.

As the Roman numerals may have given away, the Corniche IV is the fourth iteration of a two-door, front-engine model that Rolls-Royce built from 1971 to 1995. The graceful V-8, which was sold as a coupe and convertible, exuded luxury like few automobiles of its era, which helped earn it a spot in the garages of stars like Paul McCartney, Frank Sinatra, and Roy Horn. Rolls-Royce would build over 6,000 examples of the vehicle during the 24 years it was in production, but only 219 of which were from the model’s fourth generation.

Gretzky received his Corniche IV, chassis no. X50019, on March 30, 1994, exactly one week after he scored his 802nd NHL regular season goal, breaking a record that had been held by the legendary Gordie Howe for over three decades. The car was presented to Gretzky by his then-team, the Kings, before a game against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and is finished in the franchise’s colors, black and silver. The four-seat cabin is just as striking as the exterior, with burled walnut inserts on the dashboard and center console, along with leather seats in the front and back.

The Corniche IV is powered by a hand-built 6.75-liter V-8. The mill is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission that made 215 hp brand new. It’s unclear how long Gretzky owned the car, or how much he drove it (the car has less than 10,000 miles on it), but the car figures to be in tremendous shape after it was serviced by Rolls-Royce last year.

If you, or Ovechkin, who broke Gretzky’s record when he scored his 895th goal on Sunday, want to add the Corniche to your collection, you have until Thursday, April 17th, to bid. The convertible is being sold without reserve, but, as of press time, it will take a bid in excess of  $894,899 to win this auction.
