Woodford Reserve’s core lineup of whiskeys consists of bourbon, rye, wheat, and malt expressions. But the Kentucky distillery also releases some limited-edition bottles throughout the year, the latest of which is the return of the distillery-exclusive Double Double Oaked Bourbon.

Double Double Oaked first appeared as part of the Distillery Series back in 2015, and has made an appearance nearly every year since then with a few exceptions. The whiskey is a version of the core Double Oaked expression, a bourbon that is matured in two sets of casks—first in new charred oak barrels, then in a second set of heavily toasted and lightly charred oak barrels to give it an extra dose of flavor. Double Double Oaked takes this process one step further by putting Double Oaked in heavily toasted and lightly charred barrels for an additional year of maturation, resulting in what the distillery says is a slightly spicier flavor profile than the original Double Oaked. The bourbon is bottled at 90.4 proof and official tasting notes describe dried cherry, cranberry, blackberry jam, ripe apple, chai tea, and clove spice on the palate.

Finding a bottle of Double Double Oaked might present a bit of a challenge, however. These smaller 375-ml bottles (SRP $80) are available starting today at the Woodford Reserve Distillery gift shop, with a limit of two per customer, and they can also be found at select retailers around Kentucky. Outside the Bluegrass State, you might be able to find a bottle on the secondary market, but be prepared to shell out around a grand for a previous vintage. You can also find the original Double Oaked and all the other Woodford expressions available at websites like ReserveBar. And since Valentine’s Day is approaching, Woodford has also teamed up with a the creative chocolatiers at Compartes for truffles to go with your next dram.
