All the pieces To Know About The Grammy-Successful Supergroup ‘boygenius’

Hot on the heels of success from releasing their first studio album, who is music’s latest landmark supergroup, boygenius?

Gracing this year’s Grammys red carpet in matching white suits pinned with pink carnation boutonniere pins, the three members of alternative music powerhouse boygenius looked just about fresh from a summer of love tour from 1969, bringing about an air of casual prep that has defined the body of their latest hit output, aptly titled The Record.

Striking commercial pay dirt, three of the album’s lead singles, $20, Emily I’m Sorry, and True Blue, would become earworm staples on North American airwaves, nabbing them an even wider reach of audiences across the region. The unlikely Grammy contender has since nabbed two accolades, namely Best Alternative Music Album as well as Best Rock Performance, out of the seven categories that they have been contending for during the 66th iteration of the music industry’s most coveted award.

But for global audiences, boygenius may not necessarily be an immediately recognisable group on the international music rotation. In which case, it may be a surprise to learn that the trio comprised familiar faces from within the indie music scene, each with respectable solo careers in their own right.

Founded by Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, the musical outfit came about by chance, with Bridgers explaining that they had each been fans of each other’s works prior to becoming close friends and collaborators. Banding together, quite literally, against the industry’s common propensity to pit female artists against one another, they shared a common frustration in how they were billed as competing ‘women in rock’ acts in spite of their differing musical styles.

In speaking with Under the Radar magazine, Dacus said “I hope people see the three of us and know there isn’t competition,”, adding “You don’t have to compete with your contemporaries. You can make something good with people you admire. I think it’s dangerous for people to become jealous.”

Their self-titled EP, which was written, recorded, and self-produced in a span of just four days, was released in 2018 to critical acclaim. This led to an equally successful tour across America, before group members subsequently contributed vocals to each other’s solo projects in the following years. In 2023, they announced the release of their first studio album, The Record, which was led by three singles that each featured a music video directed by American actress Kristen Stewart.

However during a more intimate live show held in February of this year just days before the Grammys, the band announced that they would be going on an indefinite hiatus.
