Anthony Boyle Is Sam Bankman-Fried in ‘The Altruists’ Netflix Trailer

Anthony Boyle is almost unrecognizable in his latest role as the bushy-haired American Sam Bankman-Fried.

Netflix has dropped the official trailer for The Altruists, in which the Northern Irishman and Julia Garner star as central figures involved in the rise and fall of cryptocurrency exchange FTX: Bankman-Fried and his partner-in-crime, Caroline Ellison.

The eight-part limited series, launching on the streamer Nov. 19, is set to chronicle how Bankman-Fried and Ellison, “two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists, tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye — before they were accused of stealing $8 billion and became Gen Z’s own Bonnie & Clyde.”

The photos and trailer released Thursday show Boyle as a brazen, ambitious college student who teams up with Garner’s brainy Ellison to launch their own cryptocurrency business. “We can call it ‘FTX!’” Boyle’s character declares. “I’ve always wanted to make a difference… It’s the Wild West out there. Whoever gets there first has the opportunity to do some real good.”

Alex Lawther, Karan Soni, Naomi Okada, Madison Hu, Matt Rife and Eugene Young all co-star, as well as Heated Rivalry‘s Hudson Williams (in photos below), Paul Reiser, Robin Weigert, Maddie Hasson, Marianna Phung, Jennifer Grey, Terry Chen, William Mapother, Jack Greenlees, Elizabeth Adams, Hannah Galway, Donald Heng, David James Lewis and Jasmine Lukuku.

FTX went under in late 2022 after a run on customer withdrawals at the crypto exchange brought to light an $8 billion imbalance in its books. Bankman-Fried was convicted in November 2023 on seven charges of fraud and conspiracy, while Ellison, who was co-CEO of a related hedge fund, Alameda Research — and Bankman-Fried’s former girlfriend — testified against him after pleading guilty to other charges.

Graham Moore serves as writer, creator, and showrunner on The Altruists, with fellow writer, showrunner and EP Jacqueline Hoyt. Barack and Michelle Obama also serve as executive producers, alongside Jessie Dicovitsky and Vinnie Malhotra for Higher Ground Productions, Scoop Wasserstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios, Tonia Davis, James Ponsoldt, Lauren Morelli and Garner. The Altruists is inspired by the New York Magazine articles written by Kevin T. Dugan and Jen Wieczner.

Garner is best known for roles in Ozark, The Americans, Fantastic Four: First Steps and most recently, Zach Cregger’s Weapons. Boyle, on the other hand, is one of Britain’s biggest breakout stars who has featured in the likes of House of Guinness, Masters of the Air and I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning.
