New York City’s Fifth Avenue has become more iconic than ever with the opening of Chanel’s first-ever standalone watches and jewellery boutique in the United States.
Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment at the legendary 31 rue cambon in Paris is an endless trove of inspiration. It has inspired collections across the maison’s fashion, beauty and jewellery collections – and now it serves as the inspiration for Chanel’s first standalone watches and jewellery boutique in the United States.

Located on the iconic Fifth Avenue, the two-floored boutique’s homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment is apparent from the get-go. Walls are gilded in gold or with coromandel-style finishes – Mademoiselle Chanel loved having coromandel screens in her home – with furniture running the gamut from Regency-era mirrors to Tang Dynasty ceramic camels.
A visual feast in gold and black, the boutique was designed by longtime Chanel collaborator and New York-based architect, Peter Marino.

The flagship boutique features several salons: On the first floor are two jewellery salons and a watch salon, and on the mezzanine, two more jewellery salons, one of which is dedicated to private client appointments.
Chanel’s affinity with the world of art is also represented throughout the space, from a 13-panelled gold leaf wall collage by Iranian-American painter Y.Z. Kami in the watch salon to “Chanel, Pictures of Diamonds”, a jewel-covered piece created in Gabrielle Chanel’s likeness by Brazilian artist and photographer Vik Muniz.

If the flagship boutique is reminiscent of a jewel box, that is because the boutique is also inspired by the Chanel Watch & Fine Jewellery boutique at 18 Place Vendome in Paris. As the maison puts it, this new flagship on Fifth Avenue is a “golden jewel box”.

With an occasion so momentous for the maison, it is no surprise that Chanel has chosen this boutique to not only pre-launch the Lion Solaire de Chanel collection (below), but to also house the Eternal N°5 collection, created exclusively for it.
Comprising a transformable diamond necklace and earrings, the Fifth Avenue-only collection, as its name suggests, recalls the timeless Chanel N°5 perfume and features emerald-cut diamonds set in white gold.
The Chanel Watches & Fine Jewellery opened officially on February 9. If plans to visit New York City‘s famed shopping street are in the works for you, Chanel’s new “golden jewel box” is not to be missed.
