Corazon’s New Tequilas Had been Aged in Extremely Coveted Whiskey Barrels From Buffalo Hint

In the spirits world, you got your limited-edition collectible bottles of tequila, and your limited-edition collectible bottles of whiskey. But sometimes these two worlds collide, and never more so than in the new Expresiones del Corazón Collections from Corazón Tequila, which includes expressions aged in barrels used to mature the highly coveted Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. We got to try them all, and the results are very good.

The 2023 collection is the tenth and marks a decade since its launch, and this year’s set of six tequilas includes some old favorites as well as a couple of new expressions. All of the tequila was produced at the Casa San Matías Distillery in Jalisco, Mexico, which according to the brand is Mexico’s fourth oldest distillery. Sazerac, the company behind Corazón, also owns Buffalo Trace and all of its brands which explains why this collection is aged in these unicorn whiskey barrels. “We are thrilled to embark on this flavor adventure utilizing the exceptional barrels from Buffalo Trace Distillery, allowing us to expand the tequila landscape,” said Corazón master distiller Rocio Rodriguez Torres in a statement. “Offering aficionados an entirely new experience, these tequilas unveil a symphony of flavors reminiscent of the liquid that graced the barrels before them.”

The four expressions that are making a return are as follows: Corazón Sazerac Rye 18 Añejo Tequila aged for 24 months in Sazerac 18 barrels (sweet vanilla notes intermingled with black pepper and agave); Corazón George T. Stagg Añejo Tequila aged for 22 months in Stagg bourbon barrels (notes of chocolate, oak, and stone fruit mingled with grass and roasted agave); Corazón William Larue Weller Añejo Tequila aged for 15 months in William Larue Weller wheated bourbon barrels (balsa wood, butterscotch, and citrus notes); and Corazón Artisanal Small Batch Blanco Tequila, the only unaged expression in the collection that is made specially for it (a fantastic sipping blanco with equal parts sweetness, earthiness, citrus, and spice).

There are also two new tequilas making their debut. The first is Corazón Weller 12 Añejo Tequila, aged for 26 months in Weller 12 barrels resulting in notes of dark chocolate, tannic spice, tobacco, wet leather, and a hint of banana on the palate. The second is Corazón French Oak Añejo Tequila, aged for a minimum of 13 months in French oak barrels used to mature Old Charter Oak French Oak bourbon, with notes of sweet oak, ripe berries, vanilla custard, and cinnamon spice.

Each tequila in the collection is sold separately, with the blanco going for $60 and the rest for $80 each. Of course, just like the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection whiskeys, you might find these for much more than that on the secondary market. Check websites like Total Wine to see what they have in stock, and see if you can complete your collection.
