Lürssen’s New 375-Foot Megayacht Is Powered by a Methanol Fuel Cell

Lürssen’s newest custom megayacht is out of this world.

The 375-foot Cosmos, which the German yard launched on Saturday, eschews marine conventions in favor of a fresh design and cutting-edge green tech.

“This is a rather special project to coincide with our 150th anniversary,” CEO Peter Lürssen said in a statement. “While it is true that as a custom shipyard, no two yachts that leave our halls are ever the same, there are some that leave an indelible mark on our history—Cosmos is undoubtedly one of those yachts.”

The big, beautiful rulebreaker is one of the largest yachts to hit the water this year. It was commissioned by a “visionary owner” who wanted a unique vessel with which to discover the world. The all-steel hybrid is reinforced to Ice Class 1D, meaning it can traverse the icy fringes of the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as all five major oceans and the coasts of all seven continents.

Cosmos can also cruise the seas emissions-free, thanks to two 500 kW methanol fuel cells. This system, a first for Lürssen, uses methanol to produce hydrogen, which is then converted into electricity. The yacht can reach speeds of up to seven knots and cover up to 1,000 nautical miles on electricity alone. It can also operate at anchor with zero emissions for up to 15 days. Cosmos will also be fitted with diesel generators, engines, and tanks, which allow it to operate in traditional internal combustion mode for high-speed jaunts. Sanlorenzo was the first to incorporate methanol fuel cells on a superyacht, launching the 164-foot Almax in 2024. Feadship also launched a 290-footer equipped with hydrogen fuel cells in 2024.

Designed inside and out by Marc Newson, Cosmos combines a sleek, sculptural, slightly space age exterior with an elegant contemporary interior. With a volume of 6,300 GT and a beam of 59 feet, the yacht spans six decks and offers a generous amount of living space onboard.

“Working with an immensely creative client has enabled rare opportunities to push the boundaries,” adds Marc Newson. “Everything from the smallest detail to the silhouette—outside, inside, and everything in between—is our design.”

One of the highlights of Cosmos is the giant glass-domed owner’s study. To complete this impressive feat of engineering, Lürssen developed a custom solution to bend large sections of thick glass, free of imperfections and with crystal clarity, ensuring uninterrupted 360-degree views from the top of the vessel. The adjoining sky terrace is a private alfresco space where the owner can relax after finishing in the study.

Glass is a central feature of the cabin deck, too, surrounding the entire upper level for yet more sweeping panoramas. The observation lounge is also encased in glass, creating another scenic vantage in the bow beneath the helipad.

To the aft, an open balcony with a glass balustrade overlooks the ginormous main deck. The open space is adorned with a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi, and comfy seating. Further aft lies a dry dock from which the crew can launch and retrieve tenders.
