Michael Jordan’s Old Ferrari 550 Maranello Could Sell for $1.3 Million

Here’s your chance to drive just like Michael Jordan at the peak of his powers.

A 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello that the NBA great personally drove while winning his fifth and sixth championship rings with the Chicago Bulls will be auctioned off by Joopiter later this week. Prepare to spend big, though. The car, which comes with Jordan’s personal vanity plate, could set a new auction record.

The richest professional athlete of all time has long shown himself to be a fan of the finer things in life. This includes automobiles, like his old Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and his more Pininfarina Battista. But there are few cars His Airness is more closely associated with than his 550 Maranello. Jordan held on to the GT, which he can be seen driving in The Last Dance, for several years and it even inspired the look of the Air Jordan 14, which features a Jumpman logo inspired by the iconic Prancing Horse badge, quilted leather side panels and a tire-tread heel.

Jordan’s 550 Maranello, chassis no. 108712, is from the model’s second year of production. Its sleek exterior is finished in a rich coat of Rosso Barchetta paint and rides on a set of chrome Speedline wheels. The interior is covered in tan leather and features a custom driver’s seat. It has extended rails and less padding than usual in order to better accommodate the star’s six-foot-six frame. It is also still outfitted with the same “MJ 5” vanity plate it wore when Jordan was driving it.

The Prancing Horse comes equipped with a front-mounted 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12 mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. When it left the factory, the mill was capable of making 485 hp and 419 ft lbs of torque. Thanks to all that oomph beneath the hood, it could sprint from zero to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 199 mph. The car, which has spent the last 24 years under private ownership, appears to have been well looked after and driven sparingly, with less than 1,900 miles showing up on the odometer.

Bidding for Jordan’s former 550 Maranello opens up on Pharrell Williams’ auction platform on Tuesday, Sept. 15. The car could command as much as $1.3 million, which would be double the previous highest price paid for a 550 Maranello.
