Skydream’s Off-the-Grid Trailer Can Help Drive Itself

A startup is trying to take camping into the future as quickly as possible.

China-based Skydream will show off its binkers travel trailer during a special U.S. launch event in San Jose next week. The caravan, which doesn’t yet have a name, is packed with forward-thinking features—including steering assist and a extremely cushy cabin—that have the potential to make hitting the road easier and more comfortable than ever before.

The company’s sleek trailer is built on a proprietary skateboard chassis inspired by those that electric vehicles are built on, according to HiConsumption. The dual-axle structure, which stretches 26.5 feet end-to-end, houses two e-motors, two battery packs, a four-corner independent air suspension, along with all the vehicle’s electronics and plumbing. The batteries, which provide a combined 85 kWh or usable energy, are also connected to up to 2,200W of roof-mounted solar panels, thanks to which the company says the caravan can run for as many as 14 days off the grid. The electrical system also features vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid functionality so that it can be used as a power source in case of emergency.

What really separates Skydream’s trailer from other tech-focused options, like the Lightship AE.1 and Pebble Flow, is its advanced driver assistance system. Yes, it is a caravan that is meant to be towed, but it also features active steering assist, hill assist, traction control, and regenerative braking that will all make that task easier. The trailer also features a one-touch hitch and unhitch system that will come in handy when you get to the campground.

The interior of the caravan features everything campers will need. The layout includes a fold-away kitchen gallery with a wine rack, am entertainment area with an L-shape sofa that converts to a bed, a spacious bathroom with a stand-up shower, and a main sleeping area with a zero-gravity bed (a schematics image suggests the vehicle comfortably sleeps four). The front and rear of the trailer are also equipped with 60-inch, pull-down projector screens so campers can hold two different movie nights at once. Finally, the right side of the cabin can be folded down for use as a 59-square-foot outdoor deck.

Skydream’s trailer, unlike some of the country’s more intriguing EVs, is also destined for a stateside release. The company’s launch event announcement also includes a line saying that deliveries will begin in December of this year. We’ll likely have to wait until closer to then for pricing information.
