Sunlight’s Newest Camper Van Was Designed for Adventure
Sunlight has decided it’s time to stop keeping one of its most capable creations to itself.
The German RV maker has announced plans to put last year’s Ibex 4×4 concept into production. The rugged camper van was designed to allow adventurers to travel well off the beaten path in relative comfort.
When Sunlight unveiled the Ibex last summer, it talked it up as its most “ambitious” camper van yet. The prototype was built on the bones of a Volkswagen Crafter and loaded with all manner of off-road goodies, including a bull bar, raised roof, snorkel, integrated LED light bar, and, most importantly of all, a set of knobby off-road tires.

The production version of the Ibex, which will be based on the all-wheel-drive Crafter variant, won’t look radically different from the concept, but there have been some tweaks following a year of testing in exotic locales like Iceland and the Fareo Islands, according to New Atlas. The fiberglass roof has undergone the most refinement: It now provides six-and-a-half feet of interior space inside the cabin, offers better integration with the passenger-side awning, and has been equipped with a new light bar. It will also be available in several different colors, including the Desert Sand of the Concept, Glacier Blue, Lava Black, and Stormy Gray.
The Ibex may look tough on the outside, but it’s surprisingly soft on the inside. The van comes equipped with a rear passenger seat, small kitchenette with everything you need to prepare a meal, a compact bathroom with a toilet and stand-up shower, and a full-size mattress. It’s not the cushiest cabin out there, but its offers more creature comforts than most off-road-centric vans and trailers.

Sunlight plans to start taking orders for the Ibex in August. The company has yet to say how much its latest model will cost, but it will sit atop its camper van lineup, suggesting it will cost a fair bit more than the Fiat Ducato-based Vanlife, which starts at 61,690 pounds, or $84,000. The company has yet to say if it has any plans to bring the van stateside. If it does, we imagine there will be more than a few interested adventurers out there.
