The Mercedes-Benz ‘Little G’ Could Arrive by 2027

A smaller and more accessible Mercedes-Benz G-Class is on the horizon.
The German luxury automaker plans to introduce a “Little G” version of its beloved SUV as soon as 2027, according to Autocar. The EV will supposedly be priced at around $90,000, making it the G-Class line’s new entry-level model.
We already knew the Little G—or the Baby G, as it has sometimes been referred to—was coming, but the British publication’s report sheds more light on what to expect. Size and price won’t be the only thing that separates the two G-Wagens. The older 4×4 is built on ladder-frame chassis, but the smaller version will utilize the same unibody construction as the upcoming C-Class sedan and GLC SUV. It will also feature an 800-volt electric architecture and the company’s fifth-generation battery, which could result in a range well over 434 miles. That would likely make the SUV one of the longest-range EVs on the market at its debut.

Despite these differences, the Little G will still very clearly be a G-Wagen. There’s expected to be a strong family resemblance between the two 4x4s, which means the same boxy shape and distinctive front fascia that have defined the vehicle aren’t going anywhere. An unofficial rendering accompanying the report looks awfully similar to the battery-powered G-Class—the G 580 with EQ Technology—that went on sale last year, only with two doors instead of four. The model’s nameplate is also expected to feature a lowercase “g”

In the end, the biggest difference between the G-Wagen and Little G could come down to pricing. Since rumors of the model started circulating years ago, it was clear that Mercedes intended to make its ultra-popular SUV more accessible without deluding its brand. Autocar reports that EV is expected to start at £70,000, or roughly $92,000 by today’s exchange rate. That is more than $50,000 less than the starting price of the ICE G-Wagen and nearly $70,000 less than the E 580 with IQ Technology. It would also mean that the Little G would cost about the same as one of its nearest expected rivals, the two-door Land Rover Defender X.
