The Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX Is a 1,341 HP All-Electric Beast

Mercedes-AMG just unveiled a 1,341 horsepower all-electric hypercar that can charge 248 miles of range in five minutes. One of those numbers might get you more excited than the others, depending on your persuasion.
That’s because in an increasingly electric hypercar era, raw horsepower doesn’t impress like it used to, since making it is easier than ever before. Fast charging, though, has long been a holy grail for many autos, including for non-hypercars. The Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX is a concept car that marque says can do both: shock with its power and awe with a charging speed that isn’t much faster than the time it would take to refill a tank of gas.
The Mercedes Concept AMG GT XX has three electric motors, one up front and two in the back, and is a preview of a production car that is expected to actually drop next year: a Mercedes-AMG EV range-topper that will compete with cars like the Lucid Air Sapphire, the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, and the Audi E-Tron GT.

Mercedes did not reveal a zero-to-60 time for its latest concept, but it’s likely that it would be somewhere around the two-second mark. The brand did say, though, the car has a top speed of “more than 233 mph.” Improved batteries and electric motors provide for the fast charging times, and a key to that, Mercedes said in a release, is that the “battery remains in an optimal temperature range even during intense driving, enabling both performance on the road and extremely fast charging.” Those technological improvements were in part inspired by Mercedes’s Formula 1 team.
Inside, the Concept AMG GT XX has a smaller screen than we’ve seen in other Mercedes EVs, which have emphasized size in their screens as part of a screen arms race of sorts with other manufacturers. The concept’s screen, by contrast, is part of its “purist cockpit,” which looks like it means business. Overall, the look is very polished inside and out, and fits a car that is supposed to be close to a production version next year. Mercedes said it was a team effort.
“The best minds in our global R&D network have contributed their extensive expertise—from Mercedes‑Benz in Sindelfingen and Untertürkheim to Mercedes‑AMG in Affalterbach and YASA in the U.K. to our Formula 1 drivetrain experts at Mercedes‑AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth,” Mercedes chief technology officer Markus Schäfer said in a statement.
Mercedes did not reveal a price, but for the finished car, it will likely be well into six figures.
