This New Mercedes G-Class Is All About Its Diamonds

Valentine’s Day may have just passed, but it’s never too late to show your appreciation for the auto lover in your life. And Mercedes-Benz just released the perfect gift.

On Wednesday, the German luxury automaker pulled back the curtain on its latest ultra-exclusive G-Class variant, the Stronger Than Diamonds Edition. It’s big as far as presents go, but it’s hard to imagine anyone not immediately falling in love with the rose-gold SUV.

We’ve seen several G-Wagen variants released over the years, but the latest, which Mercedes calls “a very special symbol of love” is something else. The vehicle’s trademark boxy design is finished in a glorious coat of Rosewood Grey Mango. The metallic hue was whipped up by the brand’s Manufaktur custom division is exclusive to the model. There’s no unique badging as far as we can tell, but each exterior door handle has an embossed diamond logo.

The G-Class’s doors open up to reveal an interior that’s just as luxe as you’d expect from a vehicle so popular with the rich and famous. The cabin’s five seats are all covered in black Nappa leather with Rosé contrast stitching. The real highlight, though, is the 0.25-carat diamond set into each of the vehicle’s four stainless-steel locking pins. Other model-specific details include front grab handles and illuminated door sills adorned with stainless-steel “Stronger Than Diamonds” branding, as well as a key fob with a diamond emblem.

The variant is based on the G550. That means that you’ll find a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 under its hood. The brawny mill is connected to a nine-speed automatic gearbox and two-speed transfer cases that route 416 horses and 450 ft lbs of torque to all four wheels. You’re more likely to take the G-Wagen off-roading than racing, but it can hold its own regardless. The car can sprint from zero to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.

Interested in surprising your special someone with a G-Wagen? Be prepared to spend big for the 4×4, which will be limited to just 300 examples worldwide. As usual, Mercedes has not explicitly said how much the Stronger Than Diamonds Edition will cost. We feel pretty confident in saying that its price will come in well north of the base model’s $143,000 starting price.
