Asian Artists to Watch 2024: Meeson Jessica Pae
Each year, we identify the Asian artists on the rise, shining a light on the exciting and provocative works enriching the region’s artistic and cultural landscape. American-Korean artist Meeson Jessica Pae shares his story.
Korean-American artist Meeson Jessica Pae is appearing on the radar of a growing number of collectors in Asia, fascinated by the fantasy worlds in fleshy pink and red hues that she paints and sculpts. Working in a variety of media, including painting, video, sculpture and installation, Pae depicts the cavernous interiors of the body – its systems, architecture and landscapes – and explores its intricate connections with the wider systems of our environment and society. Through compressing the macro and the micro, she hones in on the microscopic view of cell structures, the folded crevices of flesh, enlarging veins and tubes, even incorporating mechanical interventions in her art.
“At the core of the practice,” Pae says, “I’m interested in building imagined alternate worlds that reference connections between what appears to be disparate concepts but in actuality are intertwined, parallel, and connected.”
The recipient of awards from the James Irvine Foundation, Durfee Foundation, Hans G Lordis W Burkhardt Foundation and AHL Foundation, Pae’s solo exhibitions and large-scale installations have been shown around the world. She says her forthcoming exhibition with Anat Ebgi in Los Angeles will be her most important milestone to date, as it’s her first solo exhibition to feature all parts of her practice. She’ll also be showing her art at Frieze LA and Art Basel Hong Kong, and has a Paris show in the works.
