The embodiment of resilience and dignity, a dazzling Christina Applegate walked onto the stage of the recent Emmy Awards to thunderous applause and a standing ovation that celebrated her strength in the face of hardship, as well as acknowledged her best movies and TV shows. With the aid of a cane and accompanied by host Anthony Anderson, the 52-year-old actress exuded bubbly radiance before her peers as a surprise presenter of the award for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

At the 75th Annual Emmy Awards, Christina Applegate found no shortage of physical and emotional support, chief among them her daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble, whom she shares with her husband Dutch bassist Martyn LeNoble. Wearing a cranberry-hued velvet gown by Christian Siriano, the embattled actress spared little time engaging the audience on stage, cracking jokes and quipping, “Body not by Ozempic!” to hoots of laughter.

In her brief monologue at the Emmy Awards, Christina Applegate highlighted the key roles that have shaped her life’s work as a performer. Her poignant reflection was marked by genuine moments of vulnerability, in which the actress opened up about her multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis.

Applegate has been notably absent from the public eye since her diagnosis in 2021. Her return to the awards stage is marked by the success of her Netflix series, Dead To Me, for which she received a nomination for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. While the inimitable Quinta Brunson would eventually take home the Emmy award for her work in Abbott Elementary, it was the Christina Applegate would leave the stage that night with renewed vigour and the recognition of her peers.

Surviving cancer and a life-altering diagnosis of multiple sclerosis

In 2008, Applegate was diagnosed with breast cancer. Undeterred, she faced the diagnosis with Amazonian strength, subsequently weathering a double mastectomy with dignity and grace. Then, in 2017, to reduce the risk of recurrence, she had both her ovarian and fallopian tubes removed. While that alone would certainly warrant a break from further health-related complications, misfortune would once again strike. In 2021, the actress received a life-altering diagnosis: Multiple sclerosis, a degenerative, lifelong disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in disability and decreased quality of life. Among other symptoms, MS can also cause fatigue, difficulty in walking, vision problems, muscle stiffness and spasms, and issues with balance and coordination.

Speaking to the New York Times in 2022, the star took a retrospective look at the dark period. “I wish I had paid attention,” Applegate said, reflecting on earlier days amid filming season one of Dead to Me. She’d had some balancing issues, but had dismissed them, refusing to make excuses; she opted to simply work harder.

By the time she received an official diagnosis, filming was well underway for the third and final season of the TV show, and production was consequently paused for five months so she could undergo treatment. She shared, “There was the sense of, ‘Well, let’s get her some medicine so she can get better. And there is no better. But it was good for me. I needed to process my loss of my life, my loss of that part of me. So I needed that time.”

That was not to say she took the news as gracefully as she would eventually come to bear the disease. “It’s not like I came on the other side of it, like, ‘Woohoo, I’m totally fine’. Acceptance? No. I’m never going to accept this. I’m pissed.”

Still, it took all of Applegate’s willpower to return to set to finish filming. In the earliest days of her diagnosis, executives had floated the idea of simply ending it there and then. Weary but undeterred, Applegate opted to complete the series. It was hard and took all the strength she had, pitting her quiet determination against the limitations of her symptoms. Asked why, Applegate cited that she had obligations – both to finishing the story and to the deep and profound bond of friendship she had developed with co-star Linda Cardellini.

On April 25th 2022, filming wrapped. Applegate had succeeded. And she did it all on her own terms.
