Miley Cyrus is officially a Grammy winner. The singer, songwriter, and actress, who began her journey in the entertainment industry as a child star has shown immense versatility over the years, successfully navigating her shift from teen sensation to new-age pop star. At the 66th Grammy Awards, she grabbed two major wins with Best Pop Solo Performance for her hit “Flowers” and also Best Record of the Year. Cyrus’ successful musical career has contributed favourably to her net worth over the years, but with her Grammy wins, it is expected to grow even more.

For many, their first introduction to Miley Cyrus would have been when she emerged as a teen idol while portraying the titular character of Disney Channel’s television series Hannah Montana, which ran from 2006 to 2011. For fans of the singer who have followed her through sometimes-turbulent teen years, the Grammy wins were emotional and much-deserved.

During her winning speech for Best Pop Solo Performance, the singer used a beautiful metaphor to describe her victory. She recited a sweet story of a boy who wanted to catch a butterfly for his birthday, but was unsuccessful until he let go of his dream; and eventually, the butterfly came and landed right on the tip of his nose. An elated Cyrus went on to call her song “Flowers” her “Butterfly.”

Emotional though it was, this was not the only win she would secure throughout the night. Cyrus also went on to bag one of the biggest honours of the ceremony, the Record of the Year award, and it was here that she also showed off her hilarious side. Dressed in a sparkly one-shouldered gown with a risque hip-high slit, she snuck in a spicy joke in her acceptance speech, quipping, “I don’t think I forgot anyone. But I might have forgotten underwear. Bye!” Both these speeches perfectly capture Cyrus’ playful personality.

The singer not only took home two Grammy Awards but also delivered a memorable performance at the ceremony. Taking to the stage to perform her 2023 hit single, Cyrus made the crowd cheer as she squeezed in ad-libs and adapted the lyrics to celebrate her achievement and also take a subtle jab at ex Liam Hemsworth. Energetically she sang, “I didn’t wanna leave you (but had to), I didn’t wanna fight (but we did), started to cry but then remembered – I just won my first Grammy!” The performance also felt iconic because the singer seemed to pay homage to the late Tina Turner by sporting a a metallic-silver fringe dress along with a voluminous blowout hairdo.

All through the ceremony, Cyrus also made heads turn with her outfit choices. She changed five ensembles all through the evening, starting with a custom John Galliano for Maison Margiela couture dress for her red carpet appearance, followed by a sequinned high-neck halter-top jumpsuit when she bagged the Best Pop Solo Performance accolade.

Later, she performed on stage in her vintage Bob Mackie minidress from 2002 and later changed again into a sheer black lace catsuit with a sweetheart neckline. Lastly, she stepped out in a gorgeous one-shoulder Gucci gown to accept her Record of the Year honour. Evidently, her Grammy looks were all about over-the-top glamour. Critics and netizens also couldn’t help but notice that Cyrus’ makeup, outfits and country-star blowout curls seemed to give a nod to her godmother Dolly Parton and even screen icon Jane Fonda in the 1968 film Barbarella.

Miley Cyrus’ Disney days as Hannah Montana

Miley Cyrus played the beloved Disney character with an authenticity that felt real, and in way that perfectly reflected her own reality. The series centered on Miley Stewart (Portrayed by Cyrus), a teenage girl living a double life as famous pop singer Hannah Montana, an alter ego she adopted to maintain her anonymity in order to live a normal life. While it seems natural that Cyrus is the perfect fit for the role, she had originally auditioned for the role of Lilly, Miley/Hannah’s best friend. The role of Lilly would eventually go to Emily Osment.

The popular show made her a teen icon in no time and more than her acting, it was her musical genius and refreshingly uncommon voice that garnered attention. As she began belting out pop-rock numbers for the show, Cyrus quicky began charting on Billboard and attained two number-one and three top-five soundtracks. Even before the official start of her solo career, Cyrus had successfully created a fan base that was ready to see her take on new challenges.

The Disney show, which wrapped up in four seasons also popularly featured Miley’s real-life father, Billy Ray Cyrus who played Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana’s dad, Robby Ray Stewart. Riding high on its wave of popularity, the series went on to nab four Primetime Emmy Awards nominations for Outstanding Children’s Program between 2007 and 2010. For her popular teen idol character, Cyrus also won a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Series and Leading Young Actress in 2008. The success of Hannah Montana led to the production of two feature films to expand on the universe and story, also starring Cyrus: a concert film, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds, and a feature film, Hannah Montana: The Movie.

Beginning of Miley Cyrus’ solo career

In an attempt to escape the shadows of her Disney character, Miley broke out as a solo musician in 2007 with her first album, Meet Miley Cyrus and a year later churned out her second output Breakout. Both the albums were well-received, and her single “Party in the U.S.A.” became one of the best-selling singles in the United States as well as an actual party anthem. The singer started out comfortably in the dance-pop genre and also delivered other hits such as “Can’t Be Tamed.”

Later however Cyrus underwent a serious transformation as she not only embraced music differently, but also showcased a bit of her rebellious side through her fashion. By 2013, the singer had reinvented herself, and the new Miley Cyrus was reflected in her music. The release of “Wrecking Ball” earned Cyrus her first Grammy nomination. She also embarked on her first world tour, the Wonder World Tour in 2009.

Off-screen, Cyrus experimented with her image with dramatic hair transformations and bold fashion choices. In music, she tried out multiple genres including country pop and rock. Amid the controversies surrounding her personal life, particularly the media attention on her relationships, Cyrus continued to break all perceptions and narratives through her music. Her seventh studio album, Plastic Hearts (2020) topped the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart. In 2023, Cyrus released her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, and her song ‘Flowers‘ became an instant hit. After nearly spending two decades in the music business, it was a special moment for fans who watched as Cyrus bagged two Grammys this year.

As Disney child star, Miley Cyrus’ dating life has always been the subject of scrutiny. Her first boyfriend was Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey whom she met on the set of her father’s show Doc in 2000; however, the two were too young at the time and it was merely puppy love. The singer later went onto to date fellow Disney actor of Camp Rock fame, singer singer Nick Jonas. The duo were 13 when they first met; they dated for a year from 2006 till 2007 and eventually parted ways. Cyrus also reflected on this relationship in her book, Miles To Go.

Following her romance with Jonas, the singer found love in Australian actor Liam Hemsworth and dated him on and off for 10 years between 2009 and 2019. The two got engaged for the first time back in 2012 when Cyrus was only 19 years old and Hemsworth was 22. However, the engagement lasted until September 2013, when the pair broke up. The couple then reconciled again and later also got married in December 2018. However, their marriage was short-lived, as Hemsworth filed for divorce in August 2019.

In December of 2020, Cyrus appeared on The Howard Stern Show and made rare statements about her marriage, revealing that it had ended because “there was too much conflict.” She opened up, sharing, “When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don’t get off on drama or fighting.”

Following her divorce from Hemsworth, Miley made news for a fresh romance, as she was spotted getting cosy with Kaitlynn Carter while on a trip to Italy. This whirlwind romance ended within a couple of months. After her brief fling with Carter, the singer moved on to her next relationship in October 2019, dating Australian singer and model-turned-pro swimmer Cody Simpson for under a year before eventually calling it quits.
