Eight-time Grammy Award winner Usher recently headlined the halftime show at Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas. Belting out some of his biggest hits, the singer delivered a dynamic performance. But, before that, he dropped major personal news, sharing that he had obtained a marriage license with his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer “Jenn” Goicoechea right before his iconic Super Bowl performance. The couple later tied the knot after the mega sports events. Amid his new relationship status with Goicoechea, we take a look at the singer’s relationship history.

The halftime show at Super Bowl is a coveted opportunity and Usher took it to the next level on Sunday with a heavy-hitting performance. From engaging acrobats to recreating a skating sequence from his recent Vegas residency, the singer pulled out all stops to enthrall the crowd.

While a highlight of Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers included Taylor Swift, who attended the game in support of her boyfriend Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, other big moments included Usher’s sparkling performance at the halftime show. The celebrated R&B singer did not take to the stage alone; bringing celebrity starpower in the form of Alicia Keys, Ludacris, and will.i.am, he ensured fans were treated to a halftime show to remember. Upon reuniting with Keys on stage, the singer performed a sweet rendition of their duet My Boo to thunderous applause.

Following the February 11 game which saw the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl, Usher (whose full name is Usher Raymond IV) and Jennifer exchanged vows at Vegas Weddings’ Terrace Gazebo, an outdoor wedding chapel. According reports, the singer’s mother, Jonetta Patton, was present, and served as the couple’s witness.

Before performing at the big game, Usher had spoken out in appreciation of Goicoechea, sharing that she had been a big cheerleader for him. In an interview with People, the singer shared, “I’m very happy, very fortunate to have an incredible friend, not just a partner. She’s my best friend and I love her.”

Amid tying the knot and headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, Usher has had a busy month — the singer has also recently dropped his ninth studio album, Coming Home. In addition to that, Usher’s fans have even more to celebrate, with the singer announcing his upcoming Past Present Future tour, which will kick off in Atlanta on August 16.

Usher marries Jennifer Goicoechea in Las Vegas

While Usher and Goicoechea tied the knot on February 11, 2024, the two have been together since 2019. The couple first sparked romance rumours after they were seen together at Keith Thomas’ birthday party. Goicoechea’s career as the director of the Rhythm & Soul department at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) frequently put her in contact with musicians, and the duo often crossed paths in their line of work.

Their relationship, however, would not blossom until years later in 2019. Currently, she is the senior vice president of Epic Records’ A&R department.

In March 2016, Goicoechea dropped a photo of herself whispering into Usher’s ear at an event. Later, the singer was once again seen making an appearance on her Instagram after she posted a throwback snap with Usher and other male creatives, including producer Bryan-Michael Cox, captioned simply: “Boys Club.” After a year of being together, the duo welcomed their first child, daughter Sovereign in 2020. The happy family then added another member to their growing family in 2021, welcoming their son Sire into the world.

In the early 2000s, the singer was linked to model Naomi Campbell after the two were spotted together at an event. Fans engaged in speculations about the two, who were thought to have vacationed together in Miami. Despite multiple reports claiming that the two were involved, the singer refuted the claims in a 2005 interview with Contact Music, saying, “We were never a couple. We never dated. She just accompanied me to an event and is a great friend of mine who I think is a great person.”

Usher’s relationship with Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas

One of the singer’s most famous relationships was with TLC member Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. The former couple were both a part of LaFace Records and began dating in 2001. Usher and Chilli also professionally collaborated together, with Chilli appearing in two of Usher’s music videos, U Got It Bad and U Don’t Have to Call from his 8701 project.

After years of their on-again-off-again relationship, the duo eventually parted ways. In an interview with People last year, Rozonda spoke about her past with Usher, addressing the events that led to their breakup. She said, “We definitely had some chemistry. But working chemistry does not mean it works in your personal life. If we were working, it was great. But outside of that, we’re so different.”

Speaking about his feelings for Chilli and looking back on his relationship with her, Usher recently opened up in an interview. He admitted that he was always her fan and even had a poster of her in his room when he was 8. While the couple split in 2004, nearly two decades later, the singer stated that it was a hard breakup for him. He also revealed that he had proposed to her and got turned down following which he went through “a great deal of pain.”

Both have happily moved on now and while Usher got married recently, Chilli is dating actor Matthew Lawrence.

Usher’s next relationship surfaced in 2005, when he began dating his fashion stylist Tameka Foster. The couple appeared to take their relationship seriously, and by the time 2007 rolled around, they were expecting their first child. They went on to take the big plunge, tying the knot in an intimate ceremony held in Georgia. During this time, Usher expressed, in an interview, that he wished to keep his personal life private; hence, he was unwilling to share any details about his marriage, and also Tameka’s pregnancy.

In 2009, Usher filed for divorce from Foster, and their divorce was finalised on November 4 that same year. The couple share two sons, Usher V and Naviyd Ely. Reportedly, the singer had said that that the marriage was “irretrievably broken” and maintained that the two were different people with different goals.

The duo had been dating for a few years before tying the knot, with the singer sharing in a 2014 interview that Grace was an amazing partner and manager. He revealed that she had helped him get through some of his hardest times, not only professionally but also personally. Nearly three years after their secret wedding, the duo announced their divorce in a joint statement.

The decision appeared to be mutual, with their joint statement suggesting no lingering bad blood. According to the statement, the duo intend to “— remain deeply connected, loving friends who will continue supporting each other through the next phases of our lives.”
