The ‘Tokyo Drift’ Mazda RX-7 Just Fetched Over $1 Million a Auction

Even after 10 movies, plus a spin-off, there’s still nothing quite like a Fast & Furious car.
Need proof? The 1992 Mazda RX-7 FD from the third entry in the franchise, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, sold for well over $1 million at a Bonhams auction this past weekend. The vehicle is one of two that survive from the filming of the 2005 movie, which is the closest the series has to a cult classic.
The Tokyo Drift RX-7, which is sometimes known as the RX-7 VeilSide Fortune, is arguably one of the most iconic cars to appear in a Fast & Furious movie. The custom sports car is owned by Sung Kang’s character Han Seoul-Oh and features prominently in the third installment’s more spectacular street racing sequences and makes a brief appearance in the post-credits scene from Fast & Furious 6.

The car sold at auction is one of nine built for filming, only two of which survived the production, according to Bonhams. It was not used for any of the film’s eponymous drifting sequences, which might explain why the beloved Japanese import remains in working order to this day. It appears on-screen, though, as it was used to shoot several close-ups and static shots throughout the movie.
Han’s RX-7 gets its name from its widebody Veilside body kit. This modification, along with its two-tone House of Kolor black and metallic orange paint job, are a bit part of why its so beloved. Because it is a movie car, technical specs are hard to come by, but the most powerful version of the 1992 RX-7 was powered by a 1.7-liter twin-turbocharged 13B rotary engine that made 255 hp. Some VeilSide upgrades would have likely given the car a serious performance boost, though.
Because of all this, it’s little wonder that the car sold for £911,000 (or just over $1.22 million) at Bonham’s Goodwood Festival of Speed auction on Saturday in England. The gavel price was the third highest achieved during the annual sale. It also makes the RX-7 one of the most expensive Fast & Furious cars ever sold at auction. The only car from the franchise that has sold for more is a 1999 Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R that was owned by the late Paul Walker. That car fetched $1.36 million at auction back in 2023.
